With no complete census for Ireland or Northern Ireland prior to 1901, researchers of Irish ancestors are left with few documents available to search. One of the most important substitute census that is available is the Griffith's Primary Valuation. This was a survey carried out between 1847 and 1860 that carries the names of those who occupied lands and/or buildings in each jurisdiction, the names of the persons from whom the properties were rented or leased, the amount of land involved and the value of the property held. There is a printed valuation book for each barony or poor law union and each is titled such as: "County of Tipperary S.R. (South Riding), Barony of Clanwilliam, Unions of Cashel and Tipperary."
This database is intended to give the researcher the names only of the persons holding land in County Tipperary and as such will act as an index to the Griffith's Primary Valuation. If a researcher wants to see the additional information it will be necessary to access the full survey at the National Archives in Ireland or at a nearby LDS center or perhaps at your library.
This Index is a work in progress and is by no means complete at this point. Please note that some names have a number after them indicating that that name appears more than once in that townland. It may be the same person or a relation with the same name (son/nephew/uncle). We are uncertain at this time if the holdings by women are those of widows or daughters but it would be somewhat safe to a**ume that they are widows until we have more knowledge. This index is the gift of the many volunteers on the Co-Tipperary-L message list to researchers everywhere.
There is a complete census for Carrick on Suir for 1799. It was compiled from the lists kept by each household following the insurrection of 1798 by the commander of the garrison in the town. William Morton Pitt and Patrick Lynch It contains details of the members of 10,907 people who lived in the town, their ocrelationship to the head of the household and their occupations. . 800 officers and men in the garrison were not included. This census is now on a searchable data base. Michael Coady ,poet. has included many of those inhabitants in a long poem'All Souls' which unites past and present on All souls night.
